I am the service director and one of the founders of Nickel Support. My role is managing the day to day running of the service and staff team. I work closely with trainees, parents and carers in all aspects of their lives.
I have been working with adults with learning disabilities for about 15 years. I qualified as a social worker in 2008 and decided that I wanted to continue in the field of learning disabilities, as it’ is the area of social care I am most passionate about. I am also Nickel Support’s resident Diabetes expert, having been diagnosed Type 1 since 1994.
Outside of work I love spending time with my cat Zeus, boxing, saving orchids and spending time with my family and friends.
NICK - Operations Manager
I am the Operations Director and founder. My role is undertaking a lot of the behind the scenes stuff, which is a necessary evil to keep Nickel Support pointing in the right direction. I have been working with adults with learning disabilities for about 18 years and absolutely love what I do.
Aside from being passionate about finding more employment opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, I also enjoy spending time with my young family and taking part a variety of sports.
ROY - Assistant Service Manager
I am the Assistant Service Manager and one of the staff members that has been here the longest. I support Elena with the overseeing of the service, supporting both trainees and members of staff.
I “discovered” Nickel Support when I was one of the trainees’ key worker and once I walked through that door, I never left. Am passionate about what I do and I perspire that same passion to everyone around me.
“Who’s that dancing?”, “Who’s singing?”, “There’s someones cat walking down the road... oh it’s Roy!”. Someone once said “Nickel Support is a Rainbow and Roy is the pot of gold at the end of it”... What else can I say?
DAVE – Shop Manager
I am the Shop Manager and joined Nickel Support in July 2017. I am primarily based at the Interestingly Different shop and am involved in the various enterprises that we run.
I have over twenty years worth of retail experience and have worked in all sorts of retail environments ranging from Department stores to Flagship stores on Oxford Street.
Although, I didn't have any experience of working with adults with learning disabilities before joining Nickel, I have learnt an enormous amount from working with the trainees. So much so, that I now run a couple of my own sessions, where we concentrate on work skills and serving customers.
KATY – HR Lead
As Nickel Support has grown, we have brought in top people in roles that require expertise. In Katy, we definitely have an expert and she helped re-work and shape all of our back-office functions. She has quickly become our go to woman when dealing with all HR related issues, and this has helped professionalise the service Nickel Support offer.
ASHLEY – Social Media & Branding Lead
I am the communications lead. I started officially working for Nickel in 2018 but have been involved since the beginning from working in the shop on a Saturday to helping with rebranding. My background is in Textile Design so I use a lot of my transferable creative skills when working for Nickel. I also have experience working with both children and adults with learning disabilities which really helps when working alongside the trainees.
Amongst other things my role involves maintaining the website and social media for both Nickel and Interestingly different. I love sharing the amazing work that goes on within Nickel and showcasing all the great products the trainees produce.
Most of my time out of work is taken up looking after my young children but when I get a chance I enjoy doing yoga, drawing and sewing.
HARRIET – Session Manager
I am a session manager at Nickel Support. I have been involved in Nickel since the early days through a family connection. Once I visited I couldn’t stay away, starting here as soon as I graduated.
I lead the upcycling enterprise, I love seeing the trainees breath fresh life into old furniture! The best days are spent with the team dancing around the workshop with the radio up.
Outside of work I love playing sport and spending time with my family and friends.
JACKIE – Session Manager
I am one of the session managers at Nickel Support and also an enterprise lead for online sales , soft furnishings , social media , Nickel Life and upholstery .
My role involves planning the sessions and making sure trainees and staff get the most they can out of each session . I’m constantly looking at ways to make the sessions more accessible and empowering for all trainees .
I have been working in the field of LD for 30 years and had become disheartened by the way people with LD were treated and the lack of opportunities open to them. Then I discovered Nickel Support in 2018 and my faith in humanity was restored .
Outside of work I love looking after my dog , 4 cats and 2 guinea pigs , going for long country walks with my family and entering mad obstacle courses to keep fit .
HANNAH – Support Worker
I joined Nickel Support as a support worker in 2018 after I volunteered with them for 3 months and loved every minute.
I work with the trainees in several of the enterprises including upcycling furniture, soft furnishings and Nickel life, and I particularly enjoy leading the community cafe on Mondays and Fridays. Most recently I have been involved in developing a new food enterprise and I am very excited about working more with the trainees on this project.
Outside of work I enjoy staying active by playing badminton and going to the gym, baking, and spending time with family and friends.
JO - Support Worker
My role as Support Worker is to assist the Lead Support Workers in preparing and running the sessions. This involves ensuring that all trainees are safe, that they understand what they are doing and are encouraged to progress. Furniture is upcycled by our team in the workshop and then sold on the internet or at the shop.
I find my role challenging, great fun and both staff and trainees constantly melt my heart.
I've been vegan for 5 years and really hope that one day everyone at Nickel will experience for themselves the amazing power of plants.
TONY – Support Worker
In 2018 I started working once a week as a driver and am now working as a Support Worker. (But still do a lot of the deliveries and collections)
I was introduced to Nickel Support through my love of furniture (I still think I’m the shop’s best customer) and decided I wanted to be part of this amazing organisation. I love what they do and I love the people I work with
Outside of Nickel I run my own training company and when I’m not running that or enjoying family time I like to run marathons and ultra marathons. I also love to play with my two chihuahuas
TOM - Support Worker
I am a support worker at Nickel Support. I have worked with people with learning disabilities for over 8 years in education, through PA work and now with Nickel’s trainees and enterprises.
My work involves up-cycling furniture and running a social media session with the trainees promoting our up-cycled pieces and covering IT knowledge and internet safety. I love the way my work at Nickel helps our trainees discover new talents and skills, promoting independence and pride in your work. Being a trained actor I like to think I bring a creativity to my work, and help others to bring their own creative ideas to the sessions.
In my other work I also run a early years development company and a stage production
SCOTT – Support Worker
I am one of the support workers working with the trainees in the workshop giving guidance in upcycling. My background is in construction so can be handy on difficult projects.
I joined the team over 2 years ago and enjoy seeing the trainees grow in confidence and ability. I have great banter with them all. It is very rewarding for everyone involved in nickel and I will always make sure trainees go home with a smile.
In my spare time I enjoy swimming, tennis and spending time with my family.
MARK – Assistant Support Worker
I am an assistant support worker. My role is supporting the Trainees during their sessions whether it be in the Social Media sessions, eBay or Up-cycling. I have been working with Adults with learning disabilities for about 18 months.
When i left collage i struggled to get any employment, I was pointed in the direction of Elena at Nickel who offered me a volunteering role in October 2017, who later offered me a job in August 2018. The thing i love most about working at Nickel is being able to make a difference in the trainees lives.
Outside of Nickel i enjoy volunteering with a peer support charity. I also love tinkering around with technology and finding out how things work.
We have many bank staff team members who work varying hours throughout the week, without whom Nickel Support would not function anywhere near as well. If you feel you can offer something to the team and would like to become part of an progressive and revolutionary organisation, then please check out our 'Work for Us' page.
